Common questions

Where do the emission factors come from?

The factor library aggregates the leading public sources: DEFRA 2025 (UK government conversion factors), GLEC v3.1 (Global Logistics Emissions Council), ICAO (aviation), the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmark, and the Ember Global Electricity Review 2025. All values follow IPCC AR6 GWP100. Each result page shows the exact source dataset and year for traceability.

Why does business class give a much higher number?

Business class seats take up roughly 3× the floor space of an economy seat, so each passenger is allocated 3× the per-flight emissions. First class is about 4×. The same flight in economy might be ~880 kg, in first class ~3,500 kg. This follows DEFRA's load-factor methodology.

Does "air + diesel" really mean diesel for an airplane?

No. The API maps the generic fuel code to the right physical fuel based on transport mode: air + diesel → Jet A-1, sea + diesel → Heavy Fuel Oil, air + e_fuel → SAF, sea + e_fuel → green methanol. The labels in the dropdown reflect this; the API decides the actual factor.

What's the daily quota and how does it reset?

Free tier: 20 successful calculations per IP per day. Counter resets at 00:00 UTC (~01:00 / 02:00 in Germany depending on DST). Each successful calculation = one slot. AI prompts that extract multiple activities consume one slot per activity. Failed or rejected requests cost nothing. For higher limits, enter a partner code in the banner above.

What happens to my data?

The text you type in the AI box is sent to a third-party AI service for activity extraction. The numeric parameters (origin, weight, mode...) go to our GHG factor database. Your session ledger lives in your browser only (sessionStorage) and clears when you close the tab. We log timestamps, calculation type and your IP for quota and audit purposes — no personal data is stored, none is used for model training. Full list of sub-processors is in our Privacy Policy.

Can I export the results?

Yes — the Session Ledger panel on the right has Save as PDF (a clean printable audit report with methodology & sources) and Download CSV (raw values for Excel / further processing). Reset Ledger clears the ledger but keeps the latest result on screen.

Is this an audit-grade report?

No. This is a beta tool intended as a planning aid. The methodology is industry-standard, but a verified, third-party-assured Scope 1/2/3 inventory requires manual review of supplier-specific factors, market-based Scope 2 calculations, and double-counting checks.
